"WOW!  WHAT A PARTY!"

The reviews are coming in:

Thank you to everyone on the committee!  Because of my position

I receive many of the accolades, however,

everyone in attendance knows this took a tremendous effort

from everyone on the committee.

Words can’t express my sincere appreciation

for what all of you did to make this happen.

Thanks!     -- Dennis Zubler

Congratulations to you and to your committee for a superb Foundation Dinner.  It was one of the
best if not the best. The timing was awesome.  The flow of the evening with the entertainment and Foundation recognition with awards, video, and messages was super.  Well done, Dennis  !!!

Great RF Dinner last night Dennis. You looked very relaxed. You obviously had full confidence in your team, and they ran a tightly scheduled program of varied entertainment and Rotary information so smoothly. Congratulations!!  -- Ben Hoover, Past District Governor

Dennis, you and your committee did a fabulous job in planning, organizing, and executing a Rotary Foundation dinner enjoyed by all who attended it.  Well done!  The venue, program, and entertainment could not have been better. The videos inspired all of us and should enhance giving going forward. -- Alden Cunningham

If you missed the

Rotary Foundation Heroes Banquet

you missed a great social and inspirational event.

Just how big was it?  Well-- in 2008, there were 230 people in attendance.  In 2009 there were 186. In 2010 thre were 197.  This year, we had 308 registered!  And most of them were there, smiling, eating, listening, supporting, laughing, conversing, sharing, and enjoying an amazing evening.  The increased attendance was partly due to the promotion and more importantly, to the great support given to Dennis and the Foundation by Elizabethtown Rotary Club members!  Once again, you PROVED why we are the Rotary Club that other clubs watch!

OCTOBER 2011

On October 14th Malcolm Fuller completed his narrative of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 from his perspective as Watch Supervisor in charge of the Pittsburgh Airport Tower and Radar Room when United Flight 93 crosssed over the airport and ultimately was crashed in the rural hills of Shanksville, PA, thwarting another terrorist attack.  It was the quietest our club meeting has been in a long, long time!

School Resource Officer Rick Farnsler also stopped in to tell us about the TEXT-A-TIP program that we are underwriting.  Already there has been a significant tip to help keep another student safe-- it works anonymously, and the kids understand this.

October 7th QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"I MARRIED A BASSOON!"

(attributed to an unnamed female member of the club

whose husband is fishing in Canada...)

October 7-  Our program was presented by Jim Kelly, a Temple U PhD candidate, working on a project for Middlebury College of Vermont Philanthropy Research Group  and the National Science Foundation.  We were the 10th Rotary Club in Lancaster County that he visited to conduct a live auction, raising funds for OUR club, nd collecting data to determine which types of auctions and fund-raising would be best for non-profit organizations.  We weren't very heavy bidders, but Dennis Zubler paid a "fair price" for 2 bottles of wine.  The study will include results of similar surveys taken across the country at 150 different Rotary Clubs.  We were presented a typical English Auction, but they are conducting  raffles, hybrid auctions, first price all pay, and bucket auctions.  We heard a rumor that over $200 was raised in a bucket auction held at the Donegal Club with just 11 or 12 members present.  By comparison, we didn't fare so well!  But that is the point of the study-- to see what types of auctions will raise the most money.  A bucket auction, in our club, might raise a nice chunk of change, but also might take forever, unless the per person ante was set just right. Oh well, ENJOY THE WINE, DENNIS!

September 30th brought us the classification talk of Rob Cronin, who keeps busy with a family law practice and some good non-profit housing work!  In his "spare" time he serves on the E-town School Board. The amazing thing about his presentation was he fielded quite a few questions, and managed NOT to be grilled about school issues... welcome, Rob, to a kinder, gentler E-town Rotary Club!

Rob Cronin

At our September 23rd meeting Colleen Weldon spoke to us about the great work being done at Harrisburg University with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) training in their new facility attached to Strawberry Square.

 Colleen Weldon

Offering both Bachelors and Masters Degrees, they have an enrollment of nearly 800, and are concentrating on supporting women and minority enrollment with financial aid, looking for upwards of 1500 students.  Most of the faculty is made up of business professionals, all with a PhD.  They also boast a 92% placement of all students IN their field of study, PRIOR to graduation, thanks to a very effective internship program in cooperation with local PA businesses.  Not too shabby!

On September 16th Scout Troop 51 Chairman, Glen Bootay, shared his perspective on the changes and improvements in the Scouting program over the years.  MANY questions were asked, and well answered!  Thanks, Glen, for the insights!

Air Traffic Controller for Flight 93 on 9/11/01, Mr. Mahlon (Mal) Fuller presented a sobering account of what happened to the 40 passengers of Flight 93, who prevented a third national catastrophe by their sacrifice.  He will be back in October to continue his story.

For more information about the Memorial, here is a current news account, published in the on-line Miami Herald.  It is well worth reading!

A NOSE BY ANY OTHER NAME...

Dennis Zubler represented our Club and District in typical "Itzy" style by exhibiting his clown nose at the Zone Institute in Boston.  He was being introduced on stage asthe DGE for District 7390. When asked about this sublime moment in his Rotary career, Dennis responded, "I was glad I had an extra nose."

JUNE 2011

At our June 3rd meeting Sharon Swanger gave us an eye-opening view of a cancer survivor's viewpoint on Melanoma Awereness, and various prevention and education options available to us. Sharon has a strong Rotary connection, having been involved in a college-level exchange program to Peru, sponsored by Rotary.

It was a great presentation and we wish her continued good health and success in her efforts to educate people about melanoma and other cancers.

OUR CANCER RESEARCH FUND AND THE MELANOMA SYMPOSIUM

Since it was started in 1984, our Club has contributed over $33,000 to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to establish a perpetual endowment, the income from which is used to fund Cancer Research. The endowment began as a way to provide memorial contributions in member of Paul Grubb, Jr, a Past President of the Club, who died from cancer. Later, it also became a memorial to Col. Barre Smuck, a Past President of the Club, for whom the annual Golf Tournament is named.

The present value of the invested fund exceeds $41,000. Rather than just continuing to build the fund, at the request of the College of Medicine, in 2001 the Board approved the use of income to this fund for sponsorship of the “Elizabethtown Rotary Symposium on Malignant Melanoma” at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, which is conducted annually by the Penn State Cancer Institute. The Symposium, started by Dr. Gavin Robertson, is a successful addition to the educational program of the Hershey Medical Center, and a valuable way to actively participate in the fight against cancer. The information shared by patients, researchers and doctors today brings us closer to a cure for melanoma cancers. Additional corporate sponsors have since signed on to support the event, but our club stands as the initial sponsor and we annually participate and support the event. Members are encouraged to make personal contributions to this fund, and the club continues to contribute to the symposium program annually.

Contributions may be sent to the Office of University Development, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, P. O. Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033-0852. Be sure to designate the contribution to the Elizabethtown Rotary Cancer Research Endowment Account Number 94120HY.
